What are your experiences and solutions related to reining in fraud and abuse in our healthcare system?
Health care costs are out of control. One solution that should garner support from all sides of the debate is to drastically cut down on the $70-$120 billion dollars lost annually to healthcare fraud in Medicare and Medicaid.
One estimate pegs waste, fraud and abuse in our healthcare system at over $800 billion a year. This problem is so pervasive that cutting just a fraction of the fraud would free up tens of billions of taxpayer dollars each year to modernize the system.
President Obama spoke of the, “hundreds of billions of dollars in waste and fraud,” in our healthcare system during his September 9th speech to Congress. Even the show 60 Minutes did a segment in October, 2009 asserting that there is $60 billion of annual fraud in Medicare. Steve Kroft’s opening remarks included a warning that what you are about to see, “may raise your blood pressure.”
Indeed. It is very important that participants at the February 25th summit address this issue.
We at the Center for Health Transformation have laid out several important action items that we believe will reduce fraud and abuse. But we want your reactions and your ideas.

It's not like we are creating a wheel!
Why not use the same practices that other organizations use to cut fraud?
Let's start by exmaining the top insurance organizations with the least amount of fraud (financially and per account) and let's adpt some of those practices.
Once those practices are identified: transfer 25% of the IRS auditors to spend the next 5 years auditing JUST Medicare and Medicaid with the goal of getting some processes and procedures in place to eliminate the root cause of the fraud.
